Guidelines for safeguarding good scientific practice in EURNEX e.V.

In a smooth transformation process the founding Assembly of Members unanimously elected Prof. Markus Hecht of TU Berlin as Chairman of the EURNEX Council. After two terms in office the council chairmanship of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Hecht ended and in 2019 Dr. Evangelos Bekiaris was elected the new chairman. Marion Berbineau from the University Gustave Eiffel is the Vice-Chairperson. In April 2016 Dr.-Ing. Armando carrillo Zanuy was elected as the Secretary General of the association.

The association EURNEX has awarded Prof. W.H. Steinicke with the title „Lifetime Honorific Secretary General of EURNEX“ in recognition of his founding and achievements for the association.

The EURNEX Network of Excellence comprises of 34 scientific institutes in the area of transport with particular expertise in rail research all over Europe, Marocco and China. As direct docking points to the research customers, the international associations UIC, UNIFE and UITP were also members of the EURNEX EU project and nowadays are integrated in the Advisory Board of the association.

Started in January 2004 with support from the European Commission, EURNEX pursues the main targets:

To integrate the fragmented rail research landscape in Europe

To contribute to a more competitive future European rail system by providing excellent research and education

To achieve sustainability for the NoE through a sound business model, providing durable added value for its members and the rail system stakeholders.

With EURNEX, the integration of the excellent European rail researchers has been achieved and EURNEX becomes more and more visible in the top rail research on international level. This includes as well the launch and the further development of EURNEX Scientific Poles of Excellence. With the Poles – thoroughly defined by matching of rail sector driven top-down and scientists based bottom-up process – the involved and committed EURNEX scientists profit by:

Integrating excellent research through specific disciplinary poles of excellence and with cross pole multidisciplinary cooperation

Concentrating and promoting concerted neutral expertise for stakeholders such as the railway industry, national and international authorities and bodies

Developing, promoting and providing strategies, technologies and methods to improve the performance and attractiveness of rail transport

Become a neutral, independent expert on rail research and development as well as policy issues, training and education in the railway sector

Increasing the availability of existing research and development resources in the
railway sector

Providing a platform for the Members to coordinate, structure and perform collaborative research in rail related projects and general transport issues

Supporting the Members in sharing resources and research capacities as appropriate and necessary

Promoting in a stable manner sustainable relationships with European and National Governmental institutions and other relevant stakeholders

Promoting technical standardisation and harmonisation of the rail system

Under the EURNEX umbrella a set of decentralised corporate services have been defined and further developed. These corporate services are dedicated to provide added value to the members of EURNEX, but also for the European rail sector as a whole. The corporate services are important to improve the position, standing and integrated competence of the EURNEX scientific community to be world class player as well as being visible to the industrial and political decision makers by integrating the European research area for the rail system. Therefore, the specified corporate services
